Saying there is a lot of bullshit in the self-help industry is like saying there’s a lot of water in the ocean. The majority of books and methods are only good for one thing, lining some fake guru’s pocket.
I’ve put together 11 personal growth mindsets that I’ve used to get my shit together, all of them are applicable and practical. Life is hard and if you want to excel you need to have your mind right, none of these are easy because real self development is cold, hard work, but that’s what separates the men from the boys. Here they are:
1) Warrior Mentality
This is the base of all you are. You know that you will fight when necessary, physically or mentally. Every day of your life will be a battle, there is no avoiding that, you will be tested every day in one way or another. Underneath this facade of civilization is a snarling wild animal that will fight until its dying breath.
2) Sustainability
Sustainability is the most important aspect of setting personal improvement goals, if it’s not sustainable it’s not worth doing. In self-improvement it’s better to use 80% effort, your goal are easier to sustain and you’re not subject to the law of diminishing returns.
Take clothes for example, when you go 100% on your style it makes you a slave to trends that don’t age well, will cost you a fortune and puts you in that questionably gay area. At 80% you can look better than the trend slave and build an entire wardrobe for under $1700, check out the guide here.
At 100% effort in the gym you would need to take $25,000 in performance enhancing drugs, eat a massive amount of calories per day and spend 5 to 6 hours in the gym a day for 10 to 15 years. This would get you fa body that makes you look like a scary freakshow attractive to only a certain type of girl.
With 80% effort in the gym on a brief very high intensity plan twice a week (as a measure of time in the gym, not effort as you should be putting 100% effort) you can free up your time, keep your joints from being stiff all week, and develop a body girls want to fuck, check out the guide here.
The 80% principle is a major key to sustainability, going 100% is only possible in brief periods, otherwise you’ll get burnt out. Every goal or daily routine must be sustainable otherwise its worthless.
3) Momentum
The more positive momentum you have the easier it is to accomplish things. The more negative momentum the more difficult it is to accomplish things. Momentum must be accounted for in setting any goal.
Transforming yourself is a skill that is built gradually, you can’t walk into a gym and immediately bench press 250 lbs., but with a dedicated plan over 2-5 years you can reach that goal.
4) Cultivating An Achievement Mentality
A lot of guys live in an avoidance or pleasure-seeking mentality. They just want to get through the day so they can go home and watch the game with a pizza and some beer. Or they escape into drugs and alcohol.
If you want to get your life in order, you need to change how you get high. You need to start getting high off reality, off accomplishing things your physical, business and personal goals.
5) Managing Reality
Managing Reality means controlling what you can control to keep you positive, successful and healthy. Avoid as much as possible any media that puts you in a negative mood. Avoid social situations or remove people from your life who are hampering your development. Spend time each day on something that motivates you be it books, movies or articles. Always have something to look forward to every day.
6) Positive Self-Talk
You need to be constantly talking to yourself and positively reframing throughout the day. When you’re not able to reframe a thought – realize it’s a negative thought. Understand it’s not useful to you and gently move away from it.
You need to be proactive about preventing bad moods, it’s much easier to stop one then get out of one. When you slip into a bad mood you need to remember your warrior mentality which is the base for all that you are, this will help you endure and fight off the negativity until you’re back to a good mental space.
7) Multiple Areas Of Self Esteem
You need to take pride in many areas of your life including but not limited to, your mission, your career, your presence, your style, your fitness and your relationships. This means when you’re failing in one particular area you can still receive plenty of self-esteem from others.
8) Mission
Your mission is what you were put on this earth to do. This should be your primary focus in life, your BURNING DESIRE to achieve. It needs to be something you are passionate about whether it’s your job, your business, your charity work or anything you care about.
9) Philosophy
To be truly happy, your philosophy needs to be congruent to your actions, and death positive. By being congruent with your actions your philosophy allows you to feel morally acceptable and free of cognitive dissonance. By death positive, you need to believe that you’re going to a good place when you die or are looking forward to the adventure.
Even if you’re an atheist you still need a death positive outlook, knowing that life is short you should make the most out of it.
10 Visualization
When I visualize I don’t expect things to “manifest” out of nowhere without any hard work like some bull shit self help guru’s want you too. I visualize to keep myself motivated and laser-focused on exactly what I want to become and where I’m going. You can’t get anywhere if you don’t know where you’re going.
11) Taking Action
To get anything done you need to take action, it can’t get any simpler than that. Taking action is the most important part of personal development. Start with baby steps and build momentum from there. Stop reading this post right now and start taking action!
